Product description

We were struck by the functional simplicity of this design which combines traditional craftsmanship with modern materials to provide style and comfort around the home, and beyond.

Hand-made in small batches by the craftsmen and women of Nara (at the foot of Mount Wakakusa, home to many fine temples not to mention a thousand-odd famously free-range deer), we have test-driven these sandals for several months and can confirm they are indeed very comfortable.

The hanao, aka the thong, aka the bit that goes between your toes, is made from a Niwaki Tenugui (it’s tie-dye so expect some variation in the pattern and perhaps an inexplicable yearning to listen to the Grateful Dead), the underside of which has been luxuriously lined with velvet, so any potential rubbing is transmuted into a tender downy caress.

Hard-wearing synthetic footbeds affixed to extra thick, bouncy EVA foam soles complete the design. Treat your feet!

Best usage

It’s quite alright if your heel hangs over the back a bit.

These start off fairly tight between the toes, but there’s a bit of give and they very soon settle down.
