Product description
Negishi Watering Cans are handmade by a team of just three people in Sumida, Tokyo. Solder is melted over hot coals then skilfully poured into place to fix the constituent copper parts: a laborious process but one that results in a more attractive finish.
Until the 1960s this family run business specialised in metalwork for the roofs of shrines and temples before diverting their expertise to handmade watering vessels for bonsai aficionados.
The resulting shape – the sublimation of over 60 years of design experiments – is not only beautiful and perfectly balanced but also a simple pleasure to use. Pour just the right amount of water, flowing at the right speed in the right place while causing less disturbance than a light gust of wind through an open window … I think I feel a haiku coming on.
And when you’re finished, no need to hide it away in a cupboard under the sink: we think it makes a fine decorative object in its own right, worthy of prominent display.
The copper will develop a natural patina over time: evidence of all the care and hard work you’ve lavished on your plants. If you would prefer to slow this process, wipe it dry after every use.
