Product description
Rest, weary workwear wanderer: your quest for the perfect multi-season layering piece draws to a close.
Distilling Niwaki founder Jake Hobson’s own search for the apotheosis of armless attire, filtered through an affection for hand-me-down wax jackets and Japanese workwear, the Niwaki Garden Waistcoat is a marvel of form, flexible function and comfort.
We’ve dug a little deeper into our British roots for this one, enlisting the expertise of Scottish weatherproofing pioneers Halley Stevensons (est.1864) for the dry wax ripstop organic cotton 255gsm outer, and masters of moleskin*, Brisbane Moss (est.1854), for the lining (including handwarmer pockets), with the whole thing coming together in a tailor’s workshop in Norfolk.
Field tested on chilly spring mornings admiring fallen camellia flowers against dewy moss in a Kyoto temple garden, we’ve tried it over a jumper and under a Kojima Work Jacket (giving thanks for the ribbed wool collar – a nod to Japanese baseball jackets), then later over just a shirt in a toasty izakaya (bar/pub). Crucially though, it’s also perfect in the garden, allowing for easy movement and…
…Did we mention the plethora of pockets? With the first few wears, you may panic that you’ve mislaid your secateurs again before remembering they’ve been safe all along in the main pocket’s custom secateur holder, then begin exploring what else you’ve left in the jacket overnight. The cavernous ‘poacher’s pocket’ (with poppers for partitioning it into a less roomy cavity) which reaches across the back of the waistcoat can swallow everything from a rolled up newspaper to a dachshund, so take care.
In more clement weather, the waistcoat works just as well over shirtsleeves or a t-shirt, and it’s designed to be long enough at the back that you won’t reveal too much *ahem* “gardener’s gully” when you bend over.
Chest pockets inside and out and a sturdy zip complete the feature list, and there’s a choice of a nice bright blue that approaches Yves Klein in its blueness, and a green that’s the colour of Jake’s favourite reading armchair.
*no moles, **daschunds or other animals were harmed in the making of this waistcoat. The name refers to the texture of the fabric, not its origin, and we haven’t actually tried to fit a dog in the pocket … it’s just that sort of shape.
